Murrell’s Manapouri Lookout (self-contained accommodation)
Unique Heritage Stay in the Heart of Fiordland

The Murrell family has been part of Manapouri since 1889, among the first settlers to explore the area and host visitors in this stunning corner of Aotearoa New Zealand. That tradition continues today with this peaceful, welcoming accommodation full of character and built by Jack Murrell, grandson of pioneering explorer Robert Murrell who discovered the Wilmot Pass to Doubtful Sound in the 1880s.
The house is set against the breathtaking backdrop of the UNESCO World Heritage Fiordland National Park.  Guests can enjoy stunning views from the veranda of the surrounding mountains, native beech forest, Waiau River and Lake Manapouri.

Located only 5 minutes' walk from the departure point for Doubtful Sound cruises, 20 minutes' drive from Te Anau and a scenic 2-hour drive to Milford Sound, Murrell's Manapouri Lookout is a perfect base from which to explore the region.

The accommodation comprises one queen room with ensuite and one twin room with an additional bathroom, making it ideal for couples, families, or friends. The fully equipped kitchen and open-plan living and dining area make it easy to self-cater and relax while enjoying uninterrupted views of Fiordland’s mountains and pristine wilderness.

Our rate includes all Wi-Fi, bed linen, towels and bathroom amenities.  We also provide basic grocery items such as tea, coffee, oil, salt & pepper so that you can arrive and relax.

Manapouri amenities are close by and include a bar/café, petrol station and small shop.  There are plenty of local walks to explore with the beach, lake and river a very short distance away.  Manapouri is also home to the famous Bookshop at the End of the World, Kepler Mountain View Alpaca Farm and Wild Wool Gallery and Time Traders, a treasure trove of second-hand goods –plenty to see and do!

The owners, Robert and Philippa, live nearby at the historic Murrells Grand View House where they provide hosted B&B accommodation.  They are happy to share their local knowledge and book activities if needed.
The Lookout is more than just a place to stay – it’s a connection to the spirit of Fiordland and the people who helped shape it.
